for Market Towns

Getting started

This survey will need the support of a group of committed people and to be led by a survey author. A town team or rural co-ordinator has the authority to create access to the toolkit for the survey author. In turn, the survey author will be able to create access to the toolkit for the team members. The co-ordinators are identified below. Please select the one in your sub-region or local authority.

What do you need?

Once you have formed your team and assigned passwords to your survey team, you will need the following.

Essential equipment

  • Clip board and Paper
  • Camera
  • Plan of the town
  • And most important, the survey forms.

Essential Knowledge.

Before starting, it is essential to do a team plan. Some surveys are done thematically (Shop Visual Survey, Food and Drink Visual Survey, Customer Service Survey, Market Survey) and can be submitted multiple times, other surveys are done collectively but only entered once (Context Survey, Townscape Survey, Streetscape Survey, Street Elements, Vitality Survey).

There is a range of guidance notes covering the themes, please read them before you start. The guidance has been written in such a way that each is a stand alone. There will be no need to take all the guidance with you on your survey – but as a result, collectively they repeat common aspects.
